Economics
Historically the basis of economics of Daugavpils was formed by light industry
and trade (particularly rapid growth of which began after Daugavpils became a significant railway junction at the end of 19th - beginning of the 20th century). During the Soviet times the heavy industry was the basis of the economics, majority of people were employed as factory labourers, and this was the predominant type of activity in the city (factory labourers formed about 40% of total working-age population).

Capital Investments
Investment policy of Daugavpils forms an integral part of the common economic policy of Latvia. Its aim is to improve the competitiveness of the local businessmen and to attract investors from abroad.
Accessing of Latvia the European Union opened new possibilities to Daugavpils. One of them - to draw financial resources from Structural Funds of the EU for various investment projects of the city and local businessmen. Daugavpils city council offers support to businessmen for receiving information, organizes consultations with experts and arranges seminars, thus encouraging the contacts between various commercial organizations.
Daugavpils city council develops and implements projects with the aim to improve the city environment of Daugavpils, to develop cultural environment, infrastructure and services of water handling facilities and to improve life quality of residents by using the financial resources from international and national financial institutions, EU programmes, funds and partners of bilateral cooperation.
